Domestic Development Solutions
This project explores the idea of ‘helicopter parenting’ through a satirical design system. It reimagines overprotective parenting behaviours as a series of clinical products, presented through packaging, objects, a publication and a short instructional-style film.
Each outcome uses the language of medical treatment to exaggerate ideas of control. Objects such as an eye chart, puzzle and gloves are used within the video to show how independence is limited when parents step in too quickly or too often.
By presenting these behaviours as helpful ‘solutions’, the project uses irony to highlight how they can negatively affect a child’s development and sense of autonomy.
